Now that the norm of 2020 onwards is to stay and work from home, more and more people have been asking the following questions, which all can be combined into “Is Blogging Still Worth It In The 2020s?“:
-
- Should I start a blog, even though there are billions of blogs out there?
- Can I start a blog in a particular niche, even if it is saturated?
- If I start a blog, can I still monetize it, with all the competition?

Why Do People Blog?
Before tackling the questions above, we need to understand the reasons you’d want to blog. Go through the following questions:
-
- Do you like to write and share your personal journey, accomplishments, and plans?
- Are you an expert in some topic and you feel the need to transfer your knowledge and deliver value?
- Are you passionate about certain products and can write your own reviews about them?
- Do you have a particular writing style that you’d like to showcase to the world?
If you answered yes to one or all of these questions, then blogging may be for you. I have put “may” in bold for a reason. While all the above questions may apply to you, blogging is not for everyone.

What’s In A Niche?
Now that we’ve established that you’d like to blog, let’s explore the topic you’d like to blog about, but with a twist. To keep the content of this post on topic, I won’t write about how to choose your niche, as my post “From Zero To Niche In 30 Minutes” covers this.
Instead, I’d like to address whether blogging in a certain niche is still feasible. A lot of people are afraid to choose niches that are saturated; this means that there are a lot of blogs that cover topics within those niches.
Here is a list of extremely popular niches:
-
- Health & Fitness
- Cooking & Recipes
- Making Money Online
- E-Learning
There are more, but you get the idea. So, if you’ve selected a topic from the above to blog about, how do you really make your blog unique? The answer is, by niching down. This means that you need to dig a bit deeper into the niche of your choice and choose a narrower field to write about.

Niching Down Is The Answer
Let’s take an example. Let’s say you really are passionate about everything to do with fitness. Within fitness, what really excites you? It could be exercising, bodybuilding, eating healthy, etc. Let’s say you take exercising. That topic is still a bit too competitive. Let’s niche it down. How about cardio exercises, lifting weights, using machines, etc. Within cardio exercises, we can dive into Zumba, body pump, running, swimming, etc.
Even when you finally reach the topic you think is ideal for you, you may want to cover specific ways of blogging about it. For example, let’s say you’ve chosen “Body Pump” as your topic. And you find that Body Pump is still widely blogged about, you may want to restrict how you blog about it. Your blog may have tutorials on the topic, in many media, such as video learning, audios, or actual blog posts. You may want to write about what the healthiest foods to eat to maximize your energy for “Body Pump”.
Lastly, if you plan on monetizing your blog, you would want to find products within that niche. In the case of “Body Pump” you may want to promote your own video tutorials, or promote specific products within the niche.
What’s In It For Me?
So, now that you want to blog and you know how to niche down, is it still worth it to blog? In other words, will blogging give you a return on your investment? We haven’t talked about what you need to put into blogging yet. Money, time, effort, resources? The reason many people flock towards blogging is that it’s relatively a low cost investment. BUT, what about time and effort?
Blogging Is A Long Term StrategyClick To TweetWe all know that Time is Money, and blogging is no exception. In fact, the number one deterrent of blogging is if you are impatient. Blogging needs a lot of patience. Why? Because it is a long term strategy, especially if your goal is to monetize your blog.
A lot of beginner bloggers think that just because they write an absolute masterpiece, they’ll have people come and read their blog post the minute they hit “publish”. Nothing can be farther from the truth! In fact, while creating a blog takes a lot of focus and time, you will probably spend more time promoting it. Refer to Myth No. 2 in my post: “3 Myths About Blogging You Need To Know Before Starting Your New Blog” for more info.
If You Start A Blog Today, Will You Be Able To Monetize It?
The short answer to this question is Yes. However, don’t expect to monetize it today. Making money from your blog is a long term strategy. Sure, you can start including your affiliate links in your blog posts from your very first post. But, until you have a steady stream of traffic, have nurtured your audience and have built trust with your readers, could you hope to start seeing the fruits of your labor.
And, to address the question at the beginning of this post: “Can I still monetize my blog with all the competition out there?”. Again, the answer is yes. Once you have niched down and chose a less saturated niche, you will be able to promote products and services within that niche that will still bring you revenue.
There are different ways to monetize your blog, but these are outside the scope of this post. You can refer to this post instead, which highlights one way to do so, via affiliate marketing.
The Bottom Line: Is Blogging Still Worth It?
So, to recap: since there are a lot of blogs covering saturated niches, will you still be successful in blogging? In my opinion, most definitely. With some guidance provided in this post, as well as being focused, dedicated and consistent, I believe that blogging is a viable way to start or expand your business.
