Choosing your blogging niche could be one of the most important decisions you will make for your blog, especially if you want to monetize it. You need to know what you’ll be writing about. So, how do you go about choosing your blogging niche, in other words, go from “zero to niche” in 30 minutes or less?

How Do You Choose Your Blogging Niche?

There are three main questions you need to ask yourself when you’re choosing your blogging niche:

Question #1: Are you passionate enough about the subject?

  • You must be passionate and knowledgeable about the subject you’re going to write about. Your readers must be able to read your excitement in your writing style. The more passionate you are, the more you’re going to find content to write about. And, the less likely you are to have writer’s block, which inadvertently happens when you can’t think of anything to write about.

Question #2: Will your readers like your subject matter?

  • You must find a subject that your readers will want to read about. If you are the only one passionate about your topic, your readers will never come back to your blog and will find other blogs that interest them.
  • Alternately, you can research what your readers are interested in reading. Write about solutions to problems your readers may have. When you start typing a search on Google, you often find the top “phrases” being searched. These will give you a good indication of what people are looking for. Type a word within your prospect niche and see what related words and phrases people are looking for.
  • One sure bet is to find a blogging niche where you can address a pain or problem your readers are facing. If you provide them with the solution to their problems, you’ve just found the niche to blog about.

Question #3: Will you make money in this niche?

  • If you want your blog to make you money, you need to find products in your chosen niche that you can promote. Even if you are able to meet the two above requirements, if you cannot promote any products in that niche, you won’t be making any money.
  • There are exceptions, of course. One such exception would be that you have started to have such a high flow of traffic that you can sell advertising on your blog.
  • Another exception would be to use affiliate links** and review products using them . But, in this case, you must be careful. Always review / promote products that are coherent with your niche. For example, it won’t make a lot of sense if your blog is about beauty products and you review a first-person shooter video game!
    • **Affiliate links are links to products or services that may pay you a small commission if someone decides to purchase through them

Important Things To Know About Your Blogging Niche…

In blogging, what is important is to know that you will never satisfy everyone that will read your blog. You must be content to write about what you love, knowing that your blog will appeal to some people. If you try to write for everyone, you’ll end up being read by no one! The challenge in blogging is not only to attract readers to your blog, but to keep them coming back!

This is why your blogging niche should be thoroughly researched. You need to know that people are searching for this niche and your blog will be found through search results.

Strategies To Adopt To Attract Your Readers

There are many strategies to get your readers to keep coming back. Here are a few:

Strategy #1: Content For Your Blogging Niche:

  • On average, creating exceptional content is very challenging. This is especially true when you are beginning your blogging journey. You may ask, how can I even compete with all the bloggers out there? The simple answer is “you don’t have to”.
  • What you need to concentrate on is to write content you’re passionate about, and to offer value to your readers. Your readers are always asking themselves “What’s in it for me?” – satisfy this need by giving them what they’re looking for.

Strategy #2: Education:

  • If you write “How To” posts to educate your readers on products and services, and keep your content current, you will find a lot of repeat customers.
  • You can offer e-books on strategies or tutorials on your niche products and services.

Strategy #3: Engagement:

  • Get your readers to subscribe to your blog, so that you can send them value right to their inbox.
  • Over time, you will gain their trust by sending them alerts on new blog posts or other items of value.

Strategy #4: Blog Design:

  • Make sure your blog is designed so that it is easy to read and understand. In addition, choose a responsive theme for your blog. This means that it should adjust to any screen size. With more and more people on mobile devices, your blog design becomes critical in this aspect. Did you know that Google now predominantly uses the mobile version of your content for indexing and searching?
  • Can your readers easily navigate through your site? You should design your site with categories and search options to facilitate navigation for your readers. Nothing is more frustrating to a user than a site where you can’t find the information you came looking for.
  • Make sure to optimize the site loading response. If it takes too long for the site to load, this is a sure way to lose your readers.

So, the above were just a few ways to capture your audience and keep bringing them back.

    • Hey Silenceflow,

Thank you for stopping by and for your suggestion for another blog post. I’ll probably do that as an FAQ, as it is quite a popular question. One way to get web traffic back to your site is what you’ve just done here. By leaving a comment on my post, my readers can click your name and get redirected to your blog. This is called backlinking.

  2. Hi,
my name is seid and i would like to create a blog its nich: Weight loss, but i am confused on how i choose the categories of my blog for exemple:
    Nich : Weight loss
categories: Weight loss diet / weight loss exercise / food / supplements

could you help me out please i am stuck

    • Hi Seid,
Thank you for your question. There are different ways to do what you’re asking. Your main niche is Weight Loss. The other categories are, as you said. Weight Loss Diet, Weight Loss Exercise, Food, Supplements. In my opinion, when you write a blog post, you should assign it to one category only, so it helps your audience what to select and find. So, what you would need to ask yourself is can you write many blog posts in each of these categories. If you can, you can use them as such.
My advice would be to reduce the categories to Weight Loss Diet, Weight Loss Exercise and Supplements – 3 main categories. I would then add tags to describe the posts in more details.
For example, if you write a post about a Keto Diet, you can assign it to Weight Loss Diet, then tag it under “Keto”, “Meal Plans”, etc. This way, you managed to use one category and many tabs – which by the way can help your SEO, if you use similar keywords in your post.
      Hope this helps…
