Have you ever been in a situation where you’re presenting a golden opportunity to someone, but somehow they just plain reject it? Have you ever wondered why people reject opportunity? What could be the reasons some people just won’t take action?
Today, I was listening to self-development audios and happened on the very same subject of this post. So, I listened intently, captured some of its key content, and am sharing it with you, thereby reinforcing what I learned by sharing it with the world. Cool, huh?

What Do We Mean By Opportunity?
In today’s post, I wanted to highlight the top 13 reasons why people reject opportunity. Let me qualify what I mean by opportunity. Opportunity is any change that people want to do to their current life or situation. This could be to free their time, to supplement their income, to replace their income, to get some peace, whatever.
So, here they are:
Reason #1: I have no time.
This is one of the most common excuses. There are 24 hours in a day for all of us, yet, how come some people do have time and others don’t? We all make time for something that has value for us. If you believe in something so badly, you will find the time to write down a goal and to take action in order to achieve it.
Reason #2: I have no money.
Here’s another common excuse. If there’s a will, there’s a way. You can come up with money, borrow it, make it and work for it. The other day, I had a message from someone who claimed they had no money, yet the message came from a late model Samsung smart phone! Hmm…now, was that a fact or just a lame excuse? You need to believe that you can do it and you will. If your dream or reason is big enough, you will find the money!
Reason #3: There’s no compelling reason to take action
People reject opportunity when they do not have specific goals or dreams. This means they have no compelling reason to take action to do something about their current situation. Why would you do anything if you don’t know where you’re going? When you don’t take action, it means the dreams or goals you have are not important enough.
Reason #4: They don’t believe they can succeed
Belief is such a powerful motivator. If you don’t believe in something that many others are succeeding at, then maybe it’s time to look in closely at what you really believe and at the belief that is preventing you from taking that leap of faith. If you are willing to LEARN, then you can do it!
Reason #5: They’re afraid to take action
They allow their own fears to stop them from taking action. A lot of people are afraid. Afraid of failure, afraid of stepping outside their comfort zone, afraid of this, afraid of that. They tend to analyze till they’re paralyzed. You know, it’s only when you dive in that you overcome your fear. It’s only when you take action and try that you will see that your fear was just a pre-programmed belief that was preventing you from moving ahead.
Reason #6: They base their future failure based on others’ failures
They think they’ll fail because others have failed at the same opportunity. The same is true of others who have succeeded at the same opportunity! Why do we always tend to look at the negatives? If your dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.
Reason #7: They use their family as an excuse
They use their family as an excuse not to look at the opportunity, rather than as a reason to do so! If spending time with your family is so important to you, then you owe it to your family to look at something to change your current situation!
Reason #8: They’re afraid of what others will say
Is it so shameful to embark on an opportunity that will help us succeed? Who cares what others think? Are they paying your bills? Again, this comes back to their belief in themselves and in their capacity to succeed.
Reason #9: They pre-judge the opportunity before evaluating it
They won’t even give the opportunity a chance. “Oh, you’re into one of those companies…I don’t want any of that!” It’s just silly. They should do their homework, evaluate and research it.
Reason #10: It’s easier to say no and stay in your comfort zone
People reject opportunity because it’s easier to say no and stay in their comfort zone, than to say yes and start working on something new.
Reason #11: Laziness
They’re just plain lazy. They are content to work their day to day jobs for 40 years and then retire with an income that’s barely enough to get them by. If this is OK for them, what about their family’s dreams?
Reason #12: Checking with naysayers
They believe the advice of negative people (naysayers) around them who have no idea what they’re talking about. They look at an opportunity, and when unsure, go check with their friends or family about it. Soon, they come back and say no.
Have their friends or family tried this business opportunity? Probably not. If you want to invest in stocks, would you ask your mom if she’s never done anything with stocks? Probably not. You’d probably look for financial advisors or investors who were successful at investing in stocks.
Reason #13: They have the wrong expectations from the opportunity
They actually believe that if they join an opportunity, they’ll be doing something TO people, rather than doing something FOR people. Big difference.
For example, the best thing in blogging is that it allows me to improve the lives of others, by sharing knowledge, before I see improvement in mine.

Wonderfully written and to the point. Everything comes back to ‘Believing in Oneself’ 🙂
Thanks for your feedback Pinki. It’s so true what you’re saying. Your belief system is key to everything you do in life, especially when it’s time to take risks. If you believe, you will jump in and take the risk!
